Orfeo ed Euridice is Gluck's masterpiece. His pure and perfectly balanced musical language lends a supernatural beauty and sublime pathos to this eternal tale of love and the power of music. The soprano part (Orfeo) is crucial in this opera, and this near-historic recording (1966) is blessed with the gorgeous voice of the young Grace Bumbry, one of the most unique voices of the 20th century. Anneliese Rothenberger and the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig under Vaclav Neumann further enhance the status of this recording as an ultimately moving performance practice.
