The Devil’s Backbone is presented here in a Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release featuring a stunning 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed gothic ghost story. Set during the final days of the Spanish Civil War, the film follows 12-year-old Carlos as he arrives at a remote orphanage for children of left-wing families while General Franco’s fascist forces close in on victory. Shortly after arriving, Carlos discovers that the orphanage is haunted by Santi, a dead boy who stalks its dark hallways and seeks revenge for the tragedy that ended his life.
Blending supernatural horror, historical drama, and political allegory, The Devil’s Backbone remains one of Guillermo del Toro’s defining early films. This Collector’s Edition includes new artwork by Krishna Bala Shenoi, a 64-page booklet with new essays, and two posters featuring the new artwork. The on-disc extras include a new introduction by Guillermo del Toro, multiple audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes material, documentaries, deleted scenes, special effects featurettes, the director’s notebook, a picture gallery, and the theatrical trailer.
