In 1971 with this album Sammi Smith won Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year in one fell swoop. Destined to be amongst country music royalty, her husband Jody was the longtime guitar player for country icon Willie Nelson, and their son is named Waylon after his godfather Waylon Jennings. Originally released in September 1970 on Mega Records, her debut album here though proves that as a stand-alone artist she can hold it down with the best of them. Sammi's songs are filled with melancholy and sophisticated grit that encourage real feelings and real emotions from the listener, bringing a wonderfully warm and earnest feel to every word she sings.
