DFL was founded in 1993 by Monty Messex together with Adam Horovitz (Beastie Boys) and skateboarder 'Crazy' Tom Davis. All three emerged from the early 1980s hardcore punk scene, which heavily shaped the band's sound. Inspired by bands like Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, and Germs, Messex set out to bring the raw energy of early hardcore into the present. Their debut album My Crazy Life was recorded with minimal preparation and delivers 15 short, intense tracks in just under 20 minutes, produced by Mario Caldato Jr. In 1995, Proud to Be followed on Epitaph Records-despite Horovitz's departure, he remained involved as producer, and the album's uncompromising lo-fi approach earned it cult status. The third album, Grateful... (1997), saw the band experimenting with their sound, but also marked their initial breakup. After reuniting in 2013, DFL released new material for the first time in decades with YRUDFL in 2021. Now, the band returns with nine brand-new tracks, released as a fresh EP on SBÄM Records.
