While Dayton, Ohio's finest seem an unlikely choice for the ongoing LIVE IN AUSTIN TX series--which chronicles performances from PBS's long-running show AUSTIN CITY LIMITS--Pollard and the boys' ragged, beery rock makes perfect sense within Austin's ragged, beery music scene. The 30 tracks, spread over two discs, capture GBV at the twilight of their career, recorded less than two months before their final show, and are pulled from across the band's lengthy discography.Pollard is in full-on rock bard mode and the band, arguably the tightest and most muscular he ever assembled, provides Bobby with a solid musical grounding. And while this concert isn't the definitive live GBV document, it works as something of a canonization for Pollard. He might still be your crazy drunk uncle, but he's also been known to write a mighty fine song here and there.
