Before she became the conscience of a generation, Joan Baez walked onto the Newport Folk Festival stage in 1959 as a virtually unknown teenager and stopped the crowd cold. These two debut albums, recorded when she was still a teenager and young adult, capture that raw, unaccompanied clarity that made her voice so startling, rooted in Child ballads and Appalachian tradition at a moment when folk music was just beginning to find its massive popular audience.

Joan Baez is one of the most revered and important names in contemporary folk music, a pioneer of the protest movement in the 1960 alongside Bob Dylan and others, and an artist whose peerless voice and highly personal way with a song has influenced countless folk performers who have followed in her wake over the decades.
