Produced from the original 1/4" analog master reels by Betty Cantor-Jackson, GarciaLive Vol. 18 presents a previously uncirculated complete two-set performance from the legendary Keystone Berkeley, recorded November 2, 1974. Garcia and Saunders are joined by John Kahn on bass, Martin Fierro on saxophone and flute, and Paul Humphrey on drums for genre-bending explorations of R&B, reggae, jazz, and rock.
The first set is a monster — a seamless fusion of Donny Hathaway's "Valdez in the Country," Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come," and Randy Newman's "You Can Leave Your Hat On" that destroys any notion of genre. The second set delivers a super-charged "Freedom Jazz Dance," an extended "Wondering Why" flowing into "People Make the World Go Round," and a fiery closing "Mystery Train."
