Aoxomoxoa (1969) saw the Grateful Dead dive headfirst into psychedelic wizardry and studio experimentation. Released on Warner Bros. Records and produced by the band, it was one of the first albums ever made on 16-track tape, giving them room to layer trippy harmonies, swirling effects, and lush textures. With songs like “St. Stephen,” “China Cat Sunflower,” and “Mountains of the Moon,” the record feels like a kaleidoscope of late-’60s imagination—a technicolor trip that captured the Dead at their most adventurous.
