Founded in 1961, Dutch rock band Golden Earring (or Golden Earring's, until 1969) started off as a beat band, experimented as a psychedelic quartet and finally became a heavy rock group. Their ninth album Moontan (1973) hit the international album charts and is the band's most successful album in the United States, being the only Golden Earring album to be certified Gold by the RIAA. N.E.W.S. is Golden Earring's seventeenth studio album, released in late February 1984 at the threshold of their final American and Canadian tour. Being the follow-up to their 1982 comeback album Cut, the eight tracks on N.E.W.S. feature rock and pop, as well as some soul and rap influences. The simultaneously released single "When The Lady Smiles", accompanied by a Dick Maas directed music video, tops the Dutch Top 40 chart; their fifth number one hit in their native country, as well as #3 in Canada. The album topped the Dutch album chart for three weeks in March and April 1984. CD 1 of this expanded edition contains a newly remastered version of the album, as well as the B-side "Orwell's Year" and various 7-inch and 12-inch single versions of "When The Lady Smiles", "Clear Night Moonlight", "N.E.W.S." and "Mission Impossible". On CD 2, the hour long The N.E.W.S. Sessions offers outtakes, raw mixes and alternative versions, including the very first band recordings of "Mission Impossible", "Enough Is Enough" and "When The Lady Smiles" in early 1983. All tracks have been 24 bit/192 kHz remastered from the original master tapes. This 2CD edition of N.E.W.S. is the fifth instalment in a special series of remastered & expanded albums by Golden Earring, overseen by Red Bullet catalogue and band archivist Wouter Bessels. The vinyl version of N.E.W.S. (remastered) will be released on 15 November 2024 via Music On Vinyl in a limited numbered edition of 1000 copies on red transparent vinyl and contains an insert (UPC 8719262035454).
