Originally released on a 10" LP in 1959, "A New Orleans Dixieland Spectacular" features two different sessions led by the famous New Orleans clarinetist George Lewis - the first session recorded in October of 1953 with George's New Orleans Dixieland Band, and the second in the spring of 1955 with George's Traditional Jazz Quartet. The vintage album still stands as one of the most stimulating sessions of contemporary New Orleans music on record. The Dixieland Band sessions feature George Lewis (clarinet); Jim Robinson (trombone); Avery "Kid" Howard (trumpet); Lawrence Marrero (banjo); Alcide Pavageau (bass); Alton Purnell (piano); Joe Watkins (drums). The quartet sides feature George Lewis (clarinet); Dick Oxtot (banjo); P.T. Stanton (cornet); Lelias Sharpton (bass). All selections have been newly remastered.
