Ella Fitzgerald cut her teeth on exactly these kinds of live radio performances, honing the improvisational phrasing and pitch-perfect swing that would define American vocal jazz for decades. Pairing her 1940 broadcasts with Mildred Bailey's 1945 sessions is a genuine document of how two distinct voices shaped the swing era from the inside, Bailey's bluesy Midwestern warmth alongside Ella's Chick Webb-schooled precision.

The First Lady of Song and Mrs. Swing each get a CD in this set of vintage radio broadcasts. Ella's stellar 1940 performances include her hits A-Ticket, A-Tasket; T'ain't What You Do; I Want the Waiter, and more. Mildred's star-studded 1945 broadcasts feature Tommy Dorsey, Earl Hines and others on Smoke Gets in Your Eyes; Stompin' at the Savoy; Summertime, and more!
