Vague Tidings is a sparse, haunting journey through the wilds of Alaska and the outer reaches of Americana.

Fueled by a surreal 2006 DIY tour of the 49th state, Joseph O’Connell’s latest release for Western Vinyl is both a meditation on nature and a quiet indictment of human ambition. From the eerie opener “Glacier Advisors” to the luminous tale of “Eastern Callers,” this album draws its strength from atmosphere and unease.

Written years after that formative Alaskan experience, the eight tracks on Vague Tidings feel like sonic photographs dug out of a dusty suitcase. O’Connell trades in traditional Americana for something murkier and more poetic. He sits at a creaky spinet piano, weaving lyrics that blend environmental folklore, cosmic metaphor, and subtle satire. Whether it’s the myth of conceiving children under the aurora or the ominous march of oil pipelines, his songs question progress while evoking natural wonder.

The musicianship here is understated but rich. Libby Rodenbough (Mipso) adds spectral fiddle textures, Matt Douglas (The Mountain Goats) contributes breathy woodwinds, and Matt O’Connell provides a heartbeat with a minimalist drum setup. The result is a lo-fi chamber-folk sound that refuses to settle into easy genre tags.

More than a folk record, Vague Tidings is a foggy reckoning with America’s western mythology. Part field recording, part frontier dream sequence, it feels timeless and timely - an album that asks big questions while whispering in your ear.
