Council of Thirteen has spent decades quietly building one of the more ambitious catalogs in independent American rock, with keyboardist and composer John W. Edwards serving as the band's creative backbone across 33 albums. "Down The American Road" draws from a wide stretch of the rock timeline, treating the sounds of three decades less as nostalgia than as a shared vernacular, the way a great setlist moves through eras without ever losing the thread.
The 33rd album by The Council of Thirteen is a slice of American rock styles of the 60s, 70s and 80s. 15 new songs written by keyboardist/composer John W. Edwards. Beginning with the CCR-infused title track, followed by "Light Ahead" a piece of new wave pop with a Joni Mitchell-like vocals. The seventies light rock feel of "Every Day Feels Right" is followed by the Natalie Merchant-influenced "New Ways To See. "Still Waiting On Line" is a plaintive 80's pop/rock duet. "You Should Know" adds a poignant song about second loves dealing with the knowledge of a first love. "Black and White" is an emotive bluesy/jazz-tinged story of interracial love and the complications around it. "Just One Chance" has that anthemic Richard Marx/Benny Mardones/John Parr vibe while "Back Where I Started" has a country rock feeling. "I Know This Feeling" channels Karla Bonoff/Wendy Waldman/Laura Nyro stylings. "Every Life I've Lived" has a very 80's singer songwriter feel that reminisces of Dan Fogelberg, Dan Seals or Gene Cotton. "Between The Lines We Draw" has a flair for the dramatic in a Springsteen style. "Common Ground" has an almost progressive tinged Kansas/Styx sound. "Still Standing In Line" is female led country-rock in a Dolly Parton style. "Silent Night" is an epic intense ending song about a soldier alone in a deserted outpost in space. ELO, Roxy Music, Kansas, Honeymoon Suite, REO Speedwagon, Alan Parsons Project, Asia, Genesis, Cheap Trick, Foreigner, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar, Journey, Styx, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Buggles and more!
