The great Portuguese fado singer Celeste Rodrigues is the younger sister of the great Amalia Rodrigues, the undisputed Queen of fado - a form of music originated in Portugal which dates back to the early 1800's characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics. It is a mixture of African slave rhythms with the traditional music of Portuguese sailors and has distinct Arabic influences. Modern fado is generally performed by a singer, a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar, often accompanied by the sound of the singer's shoe heels accentuating the rhythm. On this classic recording, Celeste follows in her sister's footsteps, delivering a powerful program of traditional fado classics in her inimitable style. All selections newly remastered.
