The birth of this piano-less Bud Shank sextet occurred in Shank's Port Townsend home in Washington in July 1993 following it's annual Jazzfest. The notion of a sextet without a piano was shared with tenor and soprano saxophonist Bill Perkins and the other members of the sextet (Conte Candoli on trumpet, Jack Nimitz on baritone sax, John Clayton on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums). This "piano-less" concept is not foreign to Shank's varied experiences of course and it has historical roots dating back to the Gerry Mulligan Quartet of 52-53. This CD finds this new band interpreting music replete with surprises with a high shouting quotient of diversity and excitement.
