One of the greatest voices of all time in Latin American music, Ana Nora Escobar, known artistically as Monna Bell (1938 - 2008), was a Chilean singer and actress with the distinction of having won the first annual Benidorm International Song Festival, held every year in July between 1959 and 2006 in the city of Benidorm, Spain. As an actress, she was a key part of the transitional period of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. As a vocalist, she was known for her ability to sing romantic ballads in a jazz and blues style, a quality rarely seen in Latin artists. In 1956, she was invited to perform for three weeks at the prestigious Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City - a run so successful that her season was extended for a full year. She then began a tour of Europe and became a huge hit in Madrid where she played at the Pasapoga Entertainment Center, the most famous in the city at the time, and stayed for a good period, becoming a popular favorite of the Hispanic audience. In 1959, she recorded with the great American vocal group, The Platters the song "Mi Oración" (My Prayer) which was the theme of the award-winning film, Anastasia. That same year she was invited to appear at the first edition of the Benidorm International Song Festival in the resort of Benidorm (Alicante, Spain), where she performed with the song " Un Telegrama," which won all the awards. Her recording of "Un Telegrama" soon became an international success, both in Europe and Latin America, making Bell one of the greatest selling Latin artists of the time. She later recorded songs such as " El dÃa de los Enamorados," "La Montaña" (a favorite of Juan Gabriel), "Silencio Corazón," "Aún Te Sigo Amando," "Envidia" and "Tómbola," among others, which increased her worldwide fame. She recorded with large orchestras conducted by masterful conductors such as Augusto Algueró, Gregorio GarcÃa Segura, Bebo Valdez and Ray Conniff. Presented here is a wonderful compilation of songs from Monna Bell's most productive years, from the late 1950s and early 1960s. All songs have been newly remastered for this exclusive release.
