She chose a more traditional bluegrass sound for her debut, and even though she says making another bluegrass recording would have been true to herself, it was time to explore the other musical ideas she had running around in her head. Those ideas include choosing two diverse covers to include on the recording: Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" and Radiohead's "The Tourist." Her voice finds her changing from a sweet-sounding folksinger to a sultry and contemporary musician, and the fact that she's convincing at both is pretty remarkable. Jarosz combines the covers with a slew of originals that range from dreamy pop ("My Muse") to bluegrass-inspired ballads ("Annabelle Lee"). Each piece showcases not just her effervescent vocals, but also her exceptional mandolin, clawhammer banjo and guitar skills.
A bluegrass prodigy, Jarosz invited all sorts of luminaries to join her on the new recording. Guest appearances by Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Shawn Colvin and others, along with performances featuring her regular trio-mates Alex Hargreaves and Nathaniel Smith, make Follow Me Down an ideal vehicle for Jarosz to continue experimenting with new sounds while still reviving musical traditions. - NPR.com

TRACK LIST:

1. The songs are all originals, except for covers of the Decemberists' "Shankill Butchers" and Tom Waits' "Come on Up to the House." Some of her original compositions sound remarkably ancient, such as the vinegary and modal "Tell Me True"; others are bitingly topical, such as "Broussard's Lament" -- a song that, for all its indirectness, can only be intended as a sharp commentary on the government's bungling of the rescue and recovery effort following Hurricane Katrina. Her instrumental compositions are complex but sweetly lovely, and her twin-mandolin interplay with Mike Marshall on "Mansinneedof" is especially impressive in both its pleasant accessibility and its mature sophistication. Her acoustic arrangement of "Come on Up to the House" expresses all of the original's bluesy swagger but tempers it with a more refined sense of Southern hospitality. - Allmusic.com

TRACK LIST:
1. Build Me Up from Bones reflects years of study in contemporary voice improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music. She wrote nine of the 11 songs here, and chose two covers: Bob Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate" and Joanna Newsom's "The Book of Right-On." Her various backing musicians include Viktor Krauss, Chris Thile, Darrell Scott, and Aiofe O'Donovan, to name a few. Jarosz plays guitar, banjo, and mandolins. "Over the Edge," fueled by Dan Dugmore's lap steel, Jedd Hughes' acoustic guitar, and her own octave mandolin, walks a roots rock line, while the title track is a slipstream modern folk number that finds her voice accompanied by mandolin, two string players, and O'Donovan's harmony vocal. "Dark Road" drifts between electric Americana, newgrass, and contemporary folk, kissed by Jerry Douglas' dobro and Scott's electric guitar. What all of these songs have in common is a new openness in Jarosz's singing. She takes chances with her phrasing, allowing one line to bleed just enough to inform the next; she moves her smoky alto around its range, holding dynamics in check in favor of subtle tension. Her songs are looser, more expressionistic lyrically and instrumentally; sound and texture are more important than genre. Her reading of Dylan's tune is understated, yet reveals empathy for its narrative in its marrow; her vocal is accompanied only by Nathaniel Smith's plucked cello, revealing the intimate connection. The haunted love song "Gone Too Soon" is one of the most bracing tracks here; Jarosz's banjo is complemented by a full band that features Douglas' and Scott complimenting her on Weissenborn and acoustic guitars, respectively, with Kate Rusby's chilling harmony vocal offering support. The slippery, jazz-like take on Newsom's song finds Jarosz employing a breezy blues delivery in the lyric, while her syncopated mandolin playing engages in rhythmic interplay with cello and violin. O'Donovan rejoins her on closer "Re-Arrange the Art," an expansive yet impressionistic song about lost love that walks the line between emotional stress, loneliness, and open acceptance. Jarosz's banjo is the only clearly discernible instrument as pedal steel, strings, and a Wurlizter swirl around the singers. Build Me Up from Bones separates itself from its promising predecessors because it is a songwriter's record. Jarosz lets her considerable instrumental prowess submit itself to serving the needs of her songs instead of merely adorning them with a precocious imagination. She can do this because she possesses not only self confidence in her material, but in her discernment, which is rare for a musician so young. - Thom Jurek (Allmusic.com)

TRACK LIST:

1. The bridge seems to be producer T-Bone Burnett and the band assembled for this outing: drummer Jay Bellerose (who seems to be the session drummer in demand these days), upright bassist Dennis Crouch, guitarists Marc Ribot and Burnett, with Greg Leisz playing steel here and there, and a number of other guest appearances. Krauss, a monster fiddle player, only does so on two songs here. The proceedings are, predictably, very laid-back. Burnett has only known one speed these last ten years, and so the material chosen by the three is mostly very subdued. This doesn't make it boring, despite Burnett's production, which has become utterly predictable since he started working with Gillian Welch. He has a "sound" in the same way Daniel Lanois does: it's edges are all rounded, everything is very warm, and it all sounds artificially dated. Sam Phillips' "Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us" is a centerpiece on this set. It has her fingerprints all over it. This tune, with its forlorn, percussion-heavy tarantella backdrop, might have come from a Tom Waits record were it not so intricately melodic -- and Krauss' gypsy swing fiddle is a gorgeous touch. There is an emptiness at the heart of longing particularly suited to Krauss' woodsy voice, and Plant's harmony vocal is perfect, understated yet ever-present. It's the most organically atmospheric tune on the set -- not in terms of production, but for lyric and compositional content. Along the way, from Seattle to Chicago, from Yountville, CA to Lowell, MA to Knoxville, TN, these performances all have a presence that is immediate, kinetic, and committed. Hundreds of hours of tapes were gone through to find the best performances of these songs, many of which contain guest appearances, such as "Closer to Fine" with guest vocalists Jill Hennessy, Sean and Dominic Kelly, and Georgia rock legend Michelle Malone (Malone also appears on the set closer, a killer reading of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses"). The 2006 band featured all-star drummer Matt Chamberlain as well as Carol Isaacs on keyboards and bassist Clare Kenny. By 2008 it was often down to just Ray and Saliers with Julie Wolf on accordion or some other wonderfully illustrative instrument. For her, the next logical move was to reunite with US, who had been dormant since 2004's Lonely Runs Both Ways and whose members all had busy solo careers. Given the long layoff, Paper Airplane was produced by US and engineered and mixed by Mike Shipley. According to Krauss, it was harder to complete than any previous album. Thankfully, it doesn't sound like it. It is a melancholy record, its songs largely revolve around themes of trial and perseverance. The title track that opens the record is a lilting country ballad written by Robert Lee Castleman and informed by Krauss' own recent life experiences. Her vocal is wrenching; it's utterly vulnerable in expressing love's loss, yet it's steely in its resolve, recognizing an eventual emergence. Peter Rowan's minor-key bluegrass stomper "Dust Bowl Children" features Dan Tyminski's trademark vocal. It's angry, bewildered, and determined. The interplay between Ron Block's banjo, Barry Bales' driving bassline, and Jerry Douglas' dobro is earthy, lean, and mean. Brother Viktor Krauss and Angel Snow contributed "Lie Awake," a spooky, broken love song full of swooping dobro and Krauss' forlorn fiddle. Only US could empathically back her searching, desperate vocal. Paper Airplane is sequenced beautifully. The reading of Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day" is the hinge piece on the record (and rivals the title track for the best thing here). This is Krauss' finest vocal performance this time out; it's devastating in expressing raw need, loss, and emptiness from a protagonist in the middle of a time of trial. Sidney Cox's "Bonita and Bill Butler" is a banjo-driven seafaring tragedy sung exquisitely by Tyminski before Paper Airplane closes with a stellar cover of Jackson Browne's "My Opening Farewell," which brings the album full circle, leaving the listener to meditate upon life's many episodes. Krauss' version wrings more sheer acceptance from the lyrics than Browne's own does. Paper Airplane is very polished -- pristine, even -- but there isn't an extra thing on it. It feels organic and authentic, allowing plenty of room for the emotional power in these songs to come forth. Union Station proves once more that it is a contemporary bluegrass outfit that makes no concession to contemporary country music. - Thom Jurek (AllMusic.com)

TRACK LIST:
1. Though Krauss periodically sheds her backing band to release emotive solo country albums like 1999's Forget About It, her best material continues to feature the outstanding players in Union Station, who return on New Favorite. The traditionalism of much of the group's past work—including that on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, for which Union Station guitarist and singer Dan Tyminski provided all the George Clooney parts—is left mostly to the sidelines, however. With the exception of a breezy instrumental ("Choctaw Hayride") and an overlong bit of Tyminski cornpone ("The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn"), New Favorite is dominated by austere, contemporary-sounding compositions that only sound jarringly old-fashioned compared to the '80s-rock cheese that passes for today's country music. But, while Krauss and company may alienate a few purists, they know that purists were made to be alienated, and New Favorite seems geared toward a huge crowd. It does just fine in that regard, passing the spotlight liberally (albeit mostly between Krauss and Tyminski this time) while periodically coming back around to pretty, chart-friendly ballads like "The Lucky One," "I'm Gone," "Stars," and the title track. One of the few creatively adventurous singers to maintain a presence on country radio, Krauss continues to subtly press the boundaries of her sound, but it's hard to imagine anything on New Favorite alienating the masses. - Stephen Thompson (AVClub.com)

TRACK LIST:
1. Jarosz premiered the piece at the 2017 FreshGrass Festival at Mass MoCa in North Adams, MA. The commission proved to be an exciting musical challenge for Jarosz, and she ended up with a song cycle inspired by the frequent trips she and her parents made to Port Aransas, a small town on the Gulf Coast of Texas, a few hours from her hometown of Wimberley. 2017 had proven to be an emotional year for Jarosz — her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer and the town of Port Aransas was severely impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Those two events caused Jarosz to think back to the early morning walks she and her mom would take along Mustang Island beach, and the Great Blue Herons they observed along the shore. The birds came to be a symbol of hope for her family during a difficult time, and they continue to remind her of family and home.

Thankfully, her mom is now in remission and Port Aransas is on the mend, but for Jarosz, Blue Heron Suite still encapsulates many of the feelings associated with that time and “serves as a quiet acknowledgment of life’s many uncertainties… and that you can always work to try to face the highs and lows with grace and strength.” Blue Heron Suite was recorded December 17-21, 2018 at Reservoir Studios in New York City. Jarosz is joined by Jeff Picker on bass and Jefferson Hamer on guitar and harmony vocals.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0278/7223/1499/files/p_154b4087-553d-4cb5-b3d0-090f0f86b943.png?v=1787759843
expectations-black-vinyl
Expectations - Black Vinyl Record

DESCRIPTION:

A coming of age album that pulls from pop, Americana, rock, and folk, Expectations is a daring statement tackling topics of religion, mental health, and modern love. Alison Krauss was a fan of Sidney Cox’s songwriting, and had recorded several of his songs on her first few Rounder albums. Perhaps surprisingly, it remains Alison’s only full album of religious material, although she has recorded many individual songs. Stylistically it’s acoustic country with bluegrass instruments subtly augmented by drums, piano and steel guitar, all tastefully played and arranged. The album won a well-deserved Grammy and I would recommend it to any fan of Alison Krauss- she is part of an ensemble here, but the Cox women have heavenly voices to match hers, and the album as a whole is as close to perfect as I can imagine. - MyKindOfCountry.com

TRACK LIST:

TRACK LIST:
With a storytelling sensibility that constantly shifts from candid to poetic, the Nashville-based artist details his experience with addiction, which included time in rehab and an overdose in early 2016. Rooted in a delicately sculpted sound that shows every nuance of his vocal delivery, Dying Star captures all the chaos and heartbreak on the way to finding redemption. Kelly co-produced Dying Star with Jarrad K (Kate Nash, Weezer), enlisting local musicians like singer/songwriter Natalie Hemby, Joy Williams (formerly of the Civil Wars), Kacey Musgraves (Kelly’s wife), and Abby Sevigny (Kelly’s sister) to bring the album’s gracefully melodic, guitar-driven arrangements to life. With each song centered on lucid self-examination, Kelly shapes his narrative with equal parts singer/songwriter confessionalism and punk-rock irreverence. “A lot of my music is focused on suffering, or trying to understand the human condition through the lens of suffering,” he says. “Which probably sounds totally depressing, but it’s actually the flipside of that. Sometimes you’ve gotta go into that darkness—you need to get lost and then figure out for yourself how to find your way back. That’s the only way we can find pure joy, and really be thankful for the life we’ve been given.”

TRACK LIST:
1. The album's tantalizing blend of tasteful folk and traditional bluegrass certainly deserved the award. But Old Feeling was more important as a footbridge to where Krauss would take her music -- and bluegrass itself -- over the next decade. It blended country and bluegrass with pop elements (the latter being most evident on "Longest Highway") in such an effortless way, the album couldn't possibly be seen as a play for the mainstream. The sentiment behind the gentle sway of "It's Over" and "Wish I Still Had You" was universal; blended into the honeyed voice of Krauss, it was irresistible. At the same time, the playing on "Will You Be Leaving" and "Dark Skies" was not only technically skilled, but startlingly genuine. (Sam Bush's mandolin and the dobro leads of producer Jerry Douglas were particularly impressive.) The record was imbued with the same old feeling that Krauss and her Union Station guitarist Dan Tyminski would later draw upon for O Brother, Where Art Thou? -- it was a bluegrass album at heart, but it came from a place where emotion and honesty weren't labeled with a genre tag. - Johnny Loftus (AllMusic.com)

TRACK LIST:
1. It signaled Alison Krauss & Union Station’s shift from a bluegrass-centered aesthetic to the signature post-grass, adult contemporary, mainstream sound that solidified their astronomical success. Ostensibly a bluegrass album, it rose through the ranks to land at number 4 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart in 1997, the year it was released. But the objective markers of its success really don’t matter here. What does matter is that this album brought up a generation of bluegrass pickers, and mashers, and emotive songwriters who are rabidly, unapologetically, all-encompassingly in love with this album.

TRACK LIST:
1.
